Pistol: Competitive Events


All events are 60 shot matches fired using guns with open sights.

Timed events must be fired from what is called the "Ready Position", meaning that the gun must be more than 45 ( below the horizontal when the firing period begins. Air Pistol:

60 shots fired on 60 targets at a distance of 10 meters in 1 hour 45 minutes, including unlimited "sighter shots". Guns are operated by compressed air or CO2. Our competitors trains and competes on the same type of target mechanism used at the Olympic Training Center. Air Pistol is an Olympic event.

Free Pistol:

60 shots fired on 6 targets plus unlimited shots on a sighter target in 2 hours. Any .22 caliber pistol (revolver, semiautomatic or single-shot) may be used. Although designed to be fired at 50 meters, our competitors shoot at 50 feet on reduced targets. Free Pistol is a men's Olympic event.

Standard Pistol:

60 shots fired on 6 targets with a .22 caliber pistol in 150 sec series, 20 sec series and 10 sec series fire series of 5 shots each. The 150 seconcd series consists of four string of 5 shots each fired in 150 seconds ( 2 and a half min) per series. 20 sec series is completed in 20 sec per series; Rapid fire in 10 sec per series. Timed events are fired from what is called the "ready position" in which the gun must be more than 45 degrees below the horizontal. During the allotted time, the gun must be raised and the required number of shots fired.

Womens' Air Pistol:

40 shots fired at 10 meters in 1 hour 15 minutes. Typically women fire 60 shots: the first 40 shots are used for the womens' competition; all 60 shots are used for the open competition. Women's Air Pistol is an Olympic event.

Womens' Sport Pistol:

60 shots fired with a .22 caliber pistol or revolver. Both the precision and rapid fire components consist of 6 series of 5 shots each. In the rapid fire series a target faces toward the competitor for 3 seconds, then faces away for 7 seconds. During the 3 seconds period that the target faces the shooter, she must raise her pistol from the ready position and fire one shot, then lower it in preparation for the next shot . The rapid fires competition consists of 6 series of 5 shots.

In the precision event, the competitor fires 6 series of 5 shots each in 6 minutes. Women's Sport Pistol is an Olympic event.

Rapid Fire Pistol:

60 shots fired in series of 5 shots. Four series fired at 5 different targets in 8 seconds (first raising the gun from the "ready position"!); four series fired in 6 seconds; four series fired in 4 seconds! This event is fired at the USA Shooting National Championships and competitions throughout the world. It is a mens' Olympic sport.
