Proposed UPMS Optional Relay Scheduling Policy

UPMS is committed to providing the shooting community of Utah with accessible, affordable and convenient competition activities. While UPMS encourages all competitive shooters to be participate in those match activities that are normally scheduled on weekends, UPMS also realizes that individual circumstances often arise due to work, travel, academic or other time demands that would prevent many dedicated competitive shooters from participating in a normally scheduled weekend match.

As such, UPMS is proposing the adoption of a Optional Relay Scheduling Policy which will allow shooters with time conflicts to request an optional relay time be scheduled at which they may fire their record scores for a given match. The intent is to make all such competition as fair and consistent as is reasonably possible, with the only major variable being the time or day upon which the firing takes place.

The proposed policy would be subject to the following conditions and limitations:

    1) The Match Program will indicate that the UPMS Optional Relay Scheduling Policy applies to the match. In addition, the program may also list additional scheduled relays such as a Tuesday night relay in addition to a normal weekend relay or relays.

    2) Copies of the UPMS Optional Relay Scheduling policy will be posted in all UPMS ranges and/or included in the Match Program.

    3) The match will normally be conducted as either an indoor single or multi-day event, or an outdoor multi-day event. In the case of outdoor multi-day events, in which each competitor would normally complete their record firing on only one of the two or more days of competition, their score would be compared to other scores fired on different days to compute the winner of the match. For example. individual record scores fired on either a Saturday or a Sunday are currently compared to establish a winner in our existing Outdoor Utah State and Regional Conventional Pistol Championships.

    4) All competitor's Optional Relay Scheduling requests will be made with the match director as far in advance as reasonably possible of the normally scheduled match. The match director and the competitor or competitors will coordinate an agreeable time for the Optional Relay to be fired, and all such Optional Relay firing will occur prior to the normally scheduled match.

    5) All record firing conducted at an Optional Relay shall be on the same ranges, at the same distances, on the same targets, under substantially similar conditions as the regularly scheduled match competition. Whenever possible, Optional Relays should be scheduled to coincide with existing UPMS training or practice activities. For example, a competitor requesting an optional relay might shoot their record scores during an existing practice or league activity sometime during the week prior to a weekend match.

    6) Optional Relays will be conducted under the supervision of a UPMS Range Officer.

    7) Scores fired for record by all competitors at an Optional Relay shall be recorded by the Range Officer and forwarded, along with all normal entry fees to the Match Director prior to the start of the regularly scheduled competition, and will be posted along with the balance of the scores of record firing for the competition both at the match and in the match bulletin.
